AUGUSTA, Ga. — Police say Tom Lehman, the U.S. Ryder Cup captain who lives in Scottsdale, was shot at randomly Tuesday night while he was driving to the Augusta airport to pick up his wife and family, who had flown in for the Masters.

According to Melissa Lehman, her husband was not hit, although the bullet entered the rear driver’s side door of his Cadillac courtesy car. He was on the Bobby Jones Expressway at the time, and the bullet ricocheted off the floorboard.

“Tom felt something behind his head after the bullet ricocheted, like a piece of plastic (from the bullet exiting the car),’’ she said Wednesday. “It was nothing against Tom; he was just an innocent victim. Apparently the gunman had something against Cadillac, we were told.’’

Troy Willis Smith, 26, of Augusta was arrested Wednesday and is being held on two felony counts each of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm. A Richmond County sheriff’s spokesperson said Smith was arrested after a separate shooting incident Tuesday night.

“It was totally bizarre, and Tom was pretty shook up about it,’’ Melissa Lehman said. “But he’s OK.’’
