Scottsdale advances in Cal Ripken World Series

Pitcher Brandon Koon’s two-run home run in the second inning Tuesday night gave Scottsdale a lead it would never relinquish as it advanced to the semifinals of the Cal Ripken World Series at Van Buren, Ark., by defeating Fort Smith, Ark., 7-4.

After Fort Smith scored three times in the fourth to close the gap to 5-4, Scottsdale’s Ryan Grotjohn doubled to score two runs to push the lead to 7-4. Koon pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on three hits while Alec Anson struck out four of the last six hitters.

Scottsdale plays Walluka, Fla., at 6 p.m. today. The game can be heard at .
