INDIANAPOLIS - Tamika Catchings came up with the big plays at both ends of the court and timely free throws in the final minute for the Indiana Fever.
Catchings scored 19 points, 13 rebounds and had three of her team’s nine blocked shots as the Fever (9-7) beat the Phoenix Mercury 61-60 Saturday night without making a field goal in the final 9:06.
It was Catchings’ second double-double of the season, moving her into a tie with Lauren Jackson for 10th place on the WNBA’s career list with 24.
Indiana came up with 15 turnovers and turned them into 13 points.
‘‘In the second half we picked up our defense; turnovers hurt us,’’ Mercury coach Carrie Graf said.
Phoenix got the ball to rookie Diana Taurasi underneath to try the go-ahead basket, but the shot was blocked by Catchings with 11.9 seconds to go. The ball bounced out of bounds, but Phoenix maintained possession with 11.3 seconds to go.
After a timeout, Taurasi had another shot attempt blocked by Kristen Rasmussen and the Mercury again retained possession with 4.8 seconds to go.
Phoenix botched its final chance to tie by committing its 15th turnover of the game with 2.3 seconds left.
Ann DeForge led Phoenix with 18 points and Taurasi had 14.
‘‘Defensively I thought we did some good things,’’ Taurasi said.
"However, in the end it was just not our night."
