MILWAUKEE - The Diamondbacks officially optioned righthander Andrew Good to Class AAA Tucson Monday to clear a roster spot for today’s expected activation of catcher Robby Hammock.

Assistant general manager Bob Miller said the D-Backs will likely wait until just before tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers to officially activate Hammock from the disabled list. That will give the team a chance to evaluate Hammock in pregame activity.

Manager Bob Brenly said Sunday that Hammock could catch tonight.

Hammock was expected to be Arizona’s first-string catcher, but arthroscopic knee surgery on Feb. 13 caused him to miss most of spring training. He played 10 games on a minor league rehabilitation assignment — eight with Tucson and two with Class A Lancaster — hitting .400 with three doubles and seven RBIs.

Good was called up just before the season opener to replace Shane Reynolds (strained rotator cuff) as the long man in the bullpen. Good pitched twice, with a 9.00 ERA in six innings. He is scheduled to report to Tucson for today’s game at Portland.

By sending down Good, Arizona cuts back to an 11-man pitching staff for the first time this season and will have three catchers on the roster (Hammock, Brent Mayne and Bobby Estalella).
