In honor of Bob Moran, the Tribune’s late sportswriter, the most valuable player in Saturday’s Arizona State-Arizona football game will receive the Bob Moran Most Valuable Player Award.
The Tribune is honoring Bob this week by running excerpts from past articles. Here is one from Bob’s legendary Sparky Sun Devil and Wilbur Wildcat columns in which the two schools’ mascots talk about ASU’s 1997 Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State: “I’ve heard a lot of your fans have been replaying Ohio State’s last drive,” Wilbur says.
“I’ll say this: I think we made a tactical error with respect to Ohio State’s personnel. I don’t think we thought Joe Germaine was capable of that drive. He didn’t do it against Michigan at home, so why should we think he’d do it on such a big stage like the Rose Bowl. When you don’t fear your opponent, there’s less reason to take chances. Ohio State was afraid of Jake Plummer, which is why they blitzed him on third-and-goal at the 11.”
“It was a beautiful sight seeing Ohio State score. Made my New Year’s,” Wilbur chuckles.
“Well, at least we’ve been there! Twice,” Sparky shoots back. “Arizona will play in the Rose Bowl the day pigs fly.”
