Best bet: Everybody wins: The Beat the Heat Knight 5-kilometer Run/Walk fundraiser that benefits the Gilbert Higley High School girls and boys cross country programs is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at the school’s football field (4068 E. Pecos Road).

Medals will be given to male and female winners. Medals will also be presented to the top two male and female runners in eight age groups. Call (480) 279-7350 for information.

Plan ahead

Famous instruction: If running isn’t your thing, Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman, an ESPN and NBA-TV analyst, will host a free basketball clinic this month and a two-day basketball camp in September, both taking place at Mountain View High School (2700 East Brown Road) in Mesa. Open to boys and girls ages 5-17, the clinic and camp are designed to enhance and improve overall skills and fundamentals of the game. The free clinic is set for Aug. 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. The camp is taking place Sept. 22-23. The first session will be from 7 to 9 p.m., the second is scheduled from noon to 2 p.m. Cost is $90. Register by calling (602) 218-6635, or visit www.nancylieberman.com.

Deadline near

Running out of time: Registration for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the East Valley Chandler Compadre branch’s flag football league for players ages 6-18 ends Friday. Games are weekdays at 5:30 p.m. at the club’s football fields. Cost is $30 for members, $50 for nonmembers (includes $20 annual membership fee). Call (480) 899-8302 for information.

Get in gear: Sole Ultra Softec Custom Footbeds

Why you need it: These form-hugging, custom foot beds allow you to walk or run farther and feel better by giving feet more cushioning and support. They can even correct the way the foot falls, preventing injury beyond the feet (think shin splints and tendinitis). Just pop them in the oven for a few minutes, stick them in your shoes, step in and let them mold to your feet.

Where to get it: REI, The Colorado Running Co., online

Price: $40-$45
