Two athletes with East Valley ties are among the five finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup, given to the nation’s female college athlete of the year.
Arizona State heptathlete Jacquelyn Johnson and Duke golfer Amanda Blumenherst, who is from Scottsdale and attended Phoenix Xavier Prep, are joined on the list by Tennessee basketball standout Candace Parker, Virginia Tech pitching ace Angela Tincher and North Carolina field hockey star Rachel Dawson.
They were each selected as Honda award winners in their respective sports.
Winners in 12 sports were selected by a vote from among more than 1,000 NCAA member institutions.
The Honda-Broderick Cup winner will be announced at Columbia University in New York on Monday.
The only four-time outdoor heptathlon national champion in NCAA history, Johnson is just the fourth woman in NCAA history to win the same event four times in a career.
Johnson scored 6,053 points at the most recent meet to win her seventh national title in a row.
