E.V. Briefs: Phoenix to get ABA basketball team

The American Basketball Association is coming to the Valley.

The Phoenix Fury are expected to announce their formation as a franchise at a July 10 news conference at Phoenix Greenway High School.

Phoenix will join Kansas City, Bowling Green (Ky.), Winston-Salem (N.C.) and Tampa as expansion franchises in the pro league.


The U.S. Olympic men's freestyle wrestling team will travel to Tempe for its first training camp, July 3-12 at Arizona State.

The camp will be conducted at the Vic Riches Wrestling Complex and feature the six recently chosenOlympians along with training partners.

Arizona native Henry Cejudo is an Olympian at 121 pounds. He competed at Phoenix Maryvale High School before moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., to train full time at the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

Freestyle wrestling competition at the Olympics is set for Aug. 18-21.


Scottsdale resident Nathan Lashley was in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard Thursday in the Gateway Golf Tour Desert Summer Series event at Anthem Golf and Country Club-Ironwood. Lashley shot a 5-under 72 for a two-day total of 10-under 134 to match the scores of Oscar Fraustro and Eric Johnson.

Scottsdale residents Jerry Smith and Brian Vranesh are tied for fifth place at 7 under going into today’s final round.
