Diana Taurasi, the player who may have received more hype than any women’s basketball player and then lived up to it, will be named the WNBA’s rookie of the year today, the Mercury confirmed on Sunday.
Taurasi averaged 17.0 points a game, fourth in the league, after the Mercury made her the No. 1 draft pick out of Connecticut.
She led the Huskies to the NCAA title, then played on the United States’ goldmedal winning team in the Olympics. She also led the Mercury to a 17-17 record, up from 8-26 the previous season, and a near miss in a late-season playoff run.
