Ku’ulei Salinas is taking over as coach of the Mesa Community College volleyball team. She replaces Tricia Melfy, who left the program to become a Phoenix police officer.

Salinas played volleyball at Gilbert High, Eastern Arizona College and the University of South Alabama.


J-F Plourde broke a 1-1 tie in the third round of the shootout to lift the Fresno Falcons to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Phoenix RoadRunners at Fresno, Calif.


Arizona State redshirt freshman forward Chad Goldstein has been named to the Pac-10 All-Academic second team for men's basketball.

Goldstein, a pre-business student, has an overall GPA of 3.73. The 2004 graduate of Desert Mountain High averaged 2.8 points and 1.9 rebounds per game for the Sun Devils this season.


Arizona State (6-10) dropped its fifth straight match to the No. 9 UCLA Bruins, losing 6-1 in the Pac-10 opener Friday at the Whiteman Tennis Center in Tempe.


The Arizona State women's team held first place after Friday's first round of the PING/ASU Invitational at Karsten Golf Course in Tempe.

The Sun Devils had three players shoot par or better to finish with a team score of 5-under 283. UCLA is second at 288.


Arizona's game against California Friday was postponed due to rain in Berkeley, Calif. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.


Arizona State's Pac-10 opener against Oregon in Eugene was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the fifth inning with the Sun Devils leading 2-1. The game does not count in the standings as five innings were not completed.
