The Arizona Cardinals signed third-round draft pick Rashad Johnson to a three-year contract on Thursday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Johnson, a free safety from Alabama, is expected to fight for the backup role behind Adrian Wilson and Antrel Rolle and for a spot in the Cardinals’ nickel defense.

At Alabama, Johnson was a unanimous All-SEC first-team selection and a second-team All-American in 2008. A walk-on coming out of high school, Johnson ranked second on the team with 89 tackles.

The signing leaves only first-round pick Beanie Wells, a running back from Ohio State, and second-round pick Cody Brown, a linebacker from Connecticut, without contract agreements among Cardinal draft picks.

In another move, the Cardinals released wide receiver Shane Morales, who had signed as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Oregon State.

TRACK AND FIELD

Kristina Vanderhout of Chandler won the 1,500-meter run and 2,000 steeplechase events at the USA Youth Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich.

Vanderhout, competing in the girls age 15-16 division, won the steeplechase in a time of 7 minutes, 24.25 seconds. She was first in the 1,500 with a time of 4:46.66.
