The Mesa Community College men's golf team remained in sixth place after shooting a 4-over 292 Thursday in the NJCAA Division II tournament at Scottsboro, Ala.
The Thunderbirds had a three-day total of 878. Kirkwood (Iowa) CC led the 17-team event at 5-under 859.
Mesa's Josh Butler shot a 69 Thursday to move into a tie for 10th at 1 under. Teammate Ryan Caughlan was two shots back in a tie for 17th after shooting a 73 at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course. Kirkwood's T.J. Redding sat atop the leader board at 8 under.
The tournament concludes today.
TRACK AND FIELD
- The Arizona State men's and women's track teams will open the NCAA West Region Championships today in Provo, Utah.
The meet will be conducted today and Saturday and will be used as a selection tool for the national meet, June 7-10 in Sacramento, Calif.
The top five finishers in each individual event as well as the top three relays to finish will earn a berth in the national meet.
Arizona State has posted 36 women's marks and 34 men's marks that have qualified for the regional meet, with six and eight of the marks, respectively, coming from the relays.
Two Arizona State baseball players were named to the 2006 Academic All-Pac-10 team, the conference announced Thursday. Junior Joe Persichina and sophomore Willy Fox, from Desert Mountain High School, both earned second-team honors. Also on the second team was University of Arizona junior left-hander Brad Mills, a graduate of Mountain View High School.
