Miners suffer 1st loss

The Mesa Miners lost their first game of the season, falling to the Yuma Scorpions 9-5 Saturday at Hohokam Park.

The Scorpions scored nine runs on 14 hits with one error while the Miners (2-1) had five runs on 10 hits and no errors.

Yuma jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, led by catcher Jacob Guzman’s two-run home run in the top of the second inning. The first three hitters in the lineup for the Scorpions were a combined 7-for-15 with five runs scored and two RBIs. Center fielder Javier Lopez finished the game 4-for-5 with two RBIs.

Starter Jason Navarro (0-1) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits in four innings. Scorpions starter Jorge Perez (1-0) got the win by pitching 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
