The Arizona Major League Alumni Association will honor the top baseball and softball players in the state, ranging from high school to the majors, during its Second Annual Awards Banquet noon Saturday at the Embassy Suites, 4400 S. Rural Road, Tempe.
The top honorees are Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox; Peter Bourjos, Salt Lake Bees and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; Zack MacPhee, Arizona State University baseball; K’Lee Arredondo, University of Arizona softball; Sam Lind, Central Arizona College; Anthony Haase, Cochise Community College baseball; Jordan Trujillo, Pima Community College softball; Scott Hoffman, Mesa’s Desert Ridge High School baseball; and Dallas Escobedo, St. Mary’s High School softball.
Former Arizona Diamondbacks owner and pro sports executive Jerry Colangelo will receive a lifetime achievement award. Last year, former Arizona Governor Rose Mofford received the association’s first lifetime achievement award for her efforts to save spring training in Arizona in the early 1990s.
Individual tickets to the banquet are $60. A sponsorship package that includes lunch for eight with an honoree and two foursomes to participate in the AZMLA golf tournament on Feb. 21 is $2,500. The package also includes four tickets to the Arizona Fall League Championship game on Nov. 20 at Scottsdale Stadium.
An AZMLA Celebrity table that includes lunch with a former Major Leaguer and one foursome for the Arizona Major League golf tournament, 25 tickets to the AZMLA Legends Game on Feb. 20 at Surprise Stadium and four tickets to the Arizona Fall League championship game. Part of the proceeds benefit Baseball’s Assistance Team, which assists former MLB players and their families in times of need, the Mesa Historical Museum’s Play Ball exhibit for spring training history and The Association of Professional Baseball Players of America.
