Chris MacDonald, who lost the Arizona State punter’s job in 2005 after having four kicks blocked, has transferred to Texas State in San Marcos, Texas.

MacDonald, a junior who is eligible to play immediately because Texas State is a Division I-AA school, averaged 42.3 yards per boot in eight games before Jesse Ainsworth, the Sun Devils’ placekicker, assumed the punting chores.

ASU coach Dirk Koetter consistently cited MacDonald’s low kick trajectory as the biggest reason for the blocks. MacDonald, a Mesa Red Mountain High graduate, was a freshman All-American in 2004 after averaging 43.1 yards a kick.

MacDonald’s departure leaves Ainsworth, a senior, and Jonathan Johnson, a junior-college transfer, competing for the ASU job this fall.
