3 E.V. players among Lumberjacks’ signees

FLAGSTAFF - Twenty-three student-athletes signed national letters of intent to play football at Northern Arizona University, coach Jerome Souers announced Wednesday.

“We have set a great foundation for the future with this class,” said Souers. “It is an extremely balanced class with talented student-athletes. I am proud of the work we put in and the quality and character of the players we were able to bring in here.”

The class includes six Arizona prep products including Lakeside Blue Ridge offensive lineman Dwight Boyd (6-foot-5, 270 pounds), Scottsdale Desert Mountain safety Matt Galterio (6-3, 195), Mesa tight end Beau Gardner (6-4, 240), Kingman offensive lineman Trey Gilleo (6-6, 250), Chandler Basha quarterback Troy Graham (6-5) and Phoenix Cactus tight end Caleb Richardson (6-3, 235).

Boyd was named all-state and all-region on the offensive and defensive line for Blue Ridge.

He was also a two-time region champion in wrestling, finishing as state runner-up as a junior.

Galterio was named defensive player of the year for the 5A Division I Desert Valley Region, recording 58 tackles with an interception for Desert Mountain.

Gardner was named to the all-East Valley Region second team after making catches for 305 yards with one touchdown for Mesa High.

Gilleo earned all-region second-team honors, while Graham threw for 1,113 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions, completing 75 of 127 attempts (59 percent) on the season for Basha.

Richardson had 19 catches for two touchdowns for Cactus, earning all-region first-team honors.
