The Tribune is counting down the 34 remaining days until Super Bowl XLII at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale with a memory from each Super Bowl
Super Bowl IX
When: Jan. 12, 1975
Where: Tulane Stadium, New Orleans
Score: Pittsburgh 16, Minnesota 6
Defining moment: It occurred in the locker room afterward, when NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle presented popular Steelers owner Art Rooney with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Rooney suffered through years of losing football, but after his team’s victory, “The Chief” was finally a champion.
Quotable: “Art Rooney is the greatest man who ever walked. I’m glad our victory occurred in Louisiana. This is like the hometown boy coming home to win the Super Bowl.” — Pittsburgh quarterback Terry Bradshaw, a Shreveport, La., native
Lasting impact: The Steelers won their first NFL title in more than four decades of operation. There would be much more championship glory before the 1970s were through.
Correction: The Super Bowl VIII capsule in Monday’s Tribune stated that three Super Bowls have been held on a college campus. The number should be six, including the three games at Tulane Stadium.
