Mesa Community College defeated Phoenix College 34-21 in an Arizona Community College Athletic Conference game Saturday at Mesa.

The Thunderbirds (3-3, 3-2) got off to a rough start, losing the opening kickoff deep in their own territory. Hunter Walden scored five plays later for the Bears, sneaking in from one yard out.

MCC answered behind freshman Andrew Trejo, who capped a 16-play, 76-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run to tie the score. The Thunderbirds kept rolling through the half, and even added a little trickery when Greg Mortensen handed the ball to Jeremiah White, who launched a 53-yard touchdown strike to freshman Jacob Richardson.

The Thunderbirds carried the momentum into the third quarter, forcing the Bears into a muffed punt on the opening series of the second half. White ran 24 yards for the score on the Thunderbirds' first play from scrimmage, giving Mesa a 20-point lead.

Mesa seemed to get stronger defensively as the game went on, giving the Thunderbirds offense excellent field position. After stopping Phoenix on what appeared to be a momentum-shifting drive, the Thunderbirds added to the Bears' frustration when freshman Jeff McKane took a Mortensen pass, and ran down the sideline 50 yards for a score.

The Bears (2-5, 1-5) began to click offensively late in the fourth quarter, but simply didn't have enough to slow down the Thunderbirds. Despite outgaining Mesa, the Bears were unable to come back from the early deficit.

Mesa will try for its fourth conference victory when it hosts Pima Community College this week.

NEW MEXICO MILITARY INSTITUTE 34, SCOTTSDALE CC 23: Kenny Jenkins had 118 rushing yards but it wasn't enough as the host Artichokes (2-5, 1-5) fell to New Mexico Military Institute (1-6, 1-5) in Arizona Community College Athletic Conference play. Tousant Henderson had seven catches for 101 yards for the Artichokes.
