East Valley briefs: No. 7 ASU softball dominates South Dakota State

With both Krista Donnenwirth and Caylyn Carlson going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, the seventh-ranked Arizona State softball team beat South Dakota State 14-2 in five innings Saturday night at Farrington Stadium in Tempe.

With the win, ASU improved to 20-4 overall.

The Devils got the offense rolling in the second inning, as they put up seven runs with Caylyn Carlson, Kaylyn Castillo, Jessica Mapes, Kaitlin Cochran and Katelyn Boyd all collecting RBI hits in the inning to give Megan Elliott a comfortable 7-0 lead after two innings.

ASU added seven more runs in the fourth inning, this time off of five hits and a Jackrabbit error.

The Sun Devils will wrap up their three-game series with the Jackrabbits today at 1 p.m. at Farrington Stadium.

ASU TRACK AND FIELD

• Mason McHenry smashed his own school record in the 800 meters and recorded one of three improved times as the Arizona State track and field team competed in a pair of last-chance meets on Saturday, the final time athletes could qualify for the NCAA Championships next weekend.

McHenry finished in 1:47.74, the second-fastest time in the nation this year, to automatically qualify for the NCAA event.

ASU TENNIS

• The Arizona State women’s tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend homestand on Sunday, winning all seven matches against Washington State.

ASU SWIMMING

• The Arizona State men’s swimming team finished sixth at the Pac-10 men’s swimming championships.

The team scored 238.5 points in the four-day event. Stanford won with 918.5 points.
