New church plans preview services

A new Gilbert congregation, The Voyage Church, will hold preview services Aug. 5 and 26 in advance of its grand opening on Sept. 16. The fledgling congregation meets at the Gilbert Theater in Gilbert Town Square, 1012 S. Gilbert Road. The church is led by Pastor Jeremy Harper, who calls it a church “designed to be a place for people to come and check out God at their own pace.” Services are at 10 a.m. Children will have free use of the BounceU facility near the theater.

To raise public awareness, the church held a “cheap gas” event at a nearby Shell service station where for two hours, customers got gasoline for 50 cents cheaper than the pump price in a full-service lane, and got their windows washed. For more information, call (480) 707-1592.

Evangelism training course scheduled

Evangelism training for beginners will be offered 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 4 through the Way of the Master, a one-day “evangelism crash course.” It will be held at Springdale Village Retirement Center, 7255 E. Broadway Road, Mesa. Leader Linda Essary will lead the free class that ends with dinner. Participants have the option to accompany her “out on the streets” for a hands-on experience of taking the Christian message to strangers. For more information and to make reservations by Aug. 2, call Essary at (480) 671-5797 or e-mail lindaessary@aol.com with “Way of the Master” as the e-mail subject line.

Art examines personal, public aspects of religion

The relationship between personal and public religiosity will be explored in an art exhibit by Kjellgren Alkire Aug. 3 to Sept. 1 at Eye Lounge, 419 E. Roosevelt St., Phoenix. Called “Pulpit,” it pairs printmaking with performance.

“ 'Pulpit’ asserts preaching and reading (homiletics and hermeneutics) as fine art practices,” Alkire said. “Blending poster traditions, book arts and performance, this installation features a fine art sermon series with an alternative country-gospel twang.”

An opening will be 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 3, and a reception will be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 17. Gallery hours are 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and by appointment. For more information, call (602) 430-1490 or visit eyelounge.com or kjellgrenalkire.com.
