    Chandler youth Henry Gubler knows a thing or two about pianos. The six-year-old is excited about his fall piano recital at the Chandler School of Fine Arts (CFA) since he will be performing on a Steinway. “I like the Steinway because it’s bigger,” he explains. “It makes ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ sound beautiful!”

    Tri-City Baptist Church usually invites a military chaplain to speak the Sunday before Veteran’s Day. This year their choice of guest speaker is a little unusual—the church will hear from their own senior pastor, Mike Sproul, currently stationed at an Air Force base halfway around the world.

    Mark your calendars now for the Sun Lakes Arts and Crafts Annual Fall show which is being held at the Sun Lakes Country Club on Saturday, November 26th from 9 am until 3 pm. For over 30 years this artistic group has been showcasing their creations at the Association’s annual spring and fall shows and this years Fall show will be one of the best yet.

    As part of mesa’s “Make a Difference Day” Fremont hill ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter  Day Saints organized a community painting project with members of the local neighborhood.  The cadre of workers included families with young children to retirees.  Within two hours this group of over eighty people finished painting the cinderblock wall which surrounds the retention center just east of power road on Jensen.  In addition a group of fifteen people made up of both teenagers and adults worked together to clean the yard of a neighboring elderly women.  They trimmed bushes, pulled weeds, and raked rock, leaving the yard looking immaculate.  By giving  just a few hours of their time they were able to lend a helping hand and make a real difference in the life of this elderly women.  At a later date they will return to paint the eaves with a grant from the city of Mesa that will supply the paint.  This has proved to be a great opportunity for people of all ages to come together and make a difference in their community.

    Library expansion for an early childhood learning center at Chandler Public Library’s Sunset branch will be the recipient of the Friends of Chandler Library’s 2011 fundraising campaign. The Friends of Chandler Library will kick off the campaign with a public reception, featuring Chandler artist-photographer Sue Cullumber, on Tuesday Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. in the Copper Room, located on second floor of the downtown Chandler branch.

  10. article Mesquite graduate returns from military service

    Christopher Anthony Garcia, graduate of Mesquite High School (2007) is returning to his hometown of Gilbert, Arizona after four years of service in the US Navy.  Petty Officer 2nd class Garcia was assigned to the U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln, a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier stationed in Everett Washington.  While on the Lincoln, Garcia was deployed twice to the Gulf in support of the U.S. and coalition ground force in Iraq and Afghanistan.  As a radio and communications specialist, Garcia was responsible for IT support between the ship and aircraft.
