Few things seem more lonely than the image of an elderly person who is unable anymore to get out and do things. You can help by volunteering as a Friendly Visitor for the Assistance for Independent Living Program that serves homebound elderly in Mesa, Tempe, Gilbert, Chandler and Apache Junction.

As a Friendly Visitor, you’ll spend two hours a month visiting an isolated senior citizen, a volunteer opportunity that requires nothing but the ability to listen and chat. You might also get asked to play a game of cards or chess. But most of the time, someone who is homebound just needs a companion to spend a little time bringing the outside world to them.

Friendly Visitor volunteers must have a driver’s license, pass a background check, and attend orientation and training. For more information, call Ellen Terry at (480) 966-9704 or visit www.evadultresources.org online.
