“I love the Vent. It lets me believe that there are Americans out there with a brain.”
“I suppose the Republicans will blame all this (Sandy) thing on Obama too, like he caused it.”
“If you want to see what an ‘out-of-touch’ liberal mayor looks like, go no further than the Big Apple’s Mayor Bloomberg. He will be giving free food and drink to 20,000-plus marathon out-of-town runners to show that NYC is ‘back-to-normal’.”
“Bloomberg of New York is playing the politico cards to ‘his’ advantage. Why, all of a sudden, would he support Obama? Could it be he’s struck a deal to have the Feds foot the bill for NYC. Just business as usual.”
“A quote from a Dow Chemical recent earnings report. ‘The one bright spot during the quarter was that cyanide demand was up.’ ”
“I was taken aback to read the views of one of our fellow Venters who observed that with a president like John McCain (and presumably Mitt Romney) America would have already attacked and defeated Libya, Syria, and be on the way to Tehran. But, in fact, he faithfully reflects an attitude which is very popular in America today. We are ready to intervene anywhere and crush any group of foreigners who disagree with us. A recipe in which America, the Big Bully of the World, sets itself on the path of perpetual war.”
“Why is it that Romney gets to criticize Obama for his turns of phrase (like ‘Romnesia’, where Romney forgets previous positions he once held on his political positions), yet he gets to make fun of Obama’s one-word campaign slogan, ‘Forward’ (saying it should be ‘Forewarned’)? Seems to me that what is good for Romney’s cooked goose, should be fair game for Obama’s gander.”
“To the Venter who was gloating about ‘the leading liberal newspaper in Arizona endorsing Romney’, I wonder what you think about the Salt Lake Tribune endorsing Obama? In their editorial, ‘Too Many Mitts’, they called Romney ‘the party’s shape-shifting nominee’, and asked, ‘Who is this guy, really, and what in the world does he truly believe?’ They go on to say, ‘Romney... is shameless, lavishing vastly diverse audiences with words, any words, they would trade their votes to hear’. Pretty stern words from the usually conservative, No. 1 Mormon newspaper. And to this, I say, ‘Amen!’ ”
“When the President call’s out Romney on the 47% gaffe, Romney should tell Obama that ‘you started the class-warfare by going after the 1% and increasing their taxes. Gotcha! And you said you were going to serve the whole populace evenly.’ ”

AZ Willie, It seems your facts are a little misleading, republicans only have a majority in the House, the Democrats control the Senate. Please ask Harry Reid where a budget is. The republicans voted down several of the democrat controlled senate's grossly deficit spending so-called "jobs bills" that would have increased the deficit by billions of dollars more and created a few jobs for the labor unions as did the so-called stimulus Trillion dollar package. That's all the democrats offer is tax and deficit spending.

Those in Sandy's path should be grateful Twit Romney isn't president yet. Last year, the Republican pledged that if elected, he'd shrink the defecit by axing the Federal Emergency Management Agency and handing it's responsibilities over to state authorities and private companies "it's an obsurd notion." Who would decide where to send rescures, desperately needed supplies of food and water, and federal aid" or perhaps there would be no federal aid, and every state would bear the burden of billions of dollars in damage." The New York Times
But global warming did help transform the hurricane into one of the most destructive storms in U.S. history. Climate change "amps up" storms by warming the oceans-September saw the second-highest average global sea temperatures on record-and those warm waters act like rocket fuel for hurricanes. Global warming has also raised sea levels. The Guardian (UK)
Since no restriction on greenhouse gas emissions is likely in the immediate future, densely populated costal areas like New York city will have to adapt. "The best place to look for guidance is probably the city's former colonial overlords in the Netherlands," who are experts in fending off flood waters wih dikes and dams." The idea of essentially daming up New York harbor sounds extreme." But if we do nothing, "the consequences are going to be disastrous." Slate.com

A GOP Senate?, Todd Akin, aspiring senator from Missouri, who lost a 10-point lead in the polls with his "mindboggling" statement back in August that since women can't get pregnant from "legitimate rape," there's no need for rape exception to anti-abortion laws. Indiana Senate candidate Richard Mourdock caused a new National uproar last week by saying,"even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something God intended to happen." Welcome to the modern Republican party. The Los Angeles Times.
Everyone better used to this style of thinking. The moral purists from the right-to-life movement now dominate the Republican main stream. Thus, you have unsophisticated candidated like Mourdock and Akin "letting the mass slip" on their theocratic world view; they were recently joined by Rep. Joe Walsh, who opined that thanks to "modern technology and science," abortion is never necessary to save a mother's life. there crazy ideas are premised on the conserative Christian view God's will. Most Americans, polls show, fall in the ambivalent middle-preferring that abortion remains legal but with "common sense" restrictions. Bloomberg.com

I haven't seen anyone claim Obama is to blame, but I have seen quite a few Dems claim the GOP is. (Sandy caused by ignoring climate change, etc) But something tells me that while you consider the former ridiculous, you have no problem with the latter.

This is my own vent today :)
My bride just was looking at our sample ballot and she noticed that, in the partisan contests, the Republican candidate(s) are listed FIRST ... not alphabetically.
Not voter suppression but voter steering for the lazy / stupid. It will be interesting to see if the actual ballot is the same but I think it will be -- that's why they send out the samples for people to mark up and follow when they go into the booth.
It's a minor thing but I think listing Republicans first in all partisan races is, or should be, illegal.
Where I came from, many years ago, they listed alphabetically to avoid this blatant partisan influence on the ballots.

Truth, turning FEMA's activities over to private companies seems like a MARVELOUS idea.
Then, companies could sell you insurance much like medical insurance, with millions of loopholes so that the companies can avoid paying out on claims. There would, of course, be people who could not buy disaster insurance because they live in an area where disasters have occured. Much like pre-existing conditions in medical insurance. All to the good so the companies can make greater profits. And then too, think of all the business that would generate for lawyers, with people trying to sue the insurance company that took their money then refused to pay.Oh wait, yeah it would be in the fine print that you couldn't sue them.
But it sure would be nice, wouldn't it, when a disaster happened and the private disaster companies rolled in to give immediate aid to survivors and charged them $3 for a cup of coffee and only $7 for a roll. It's like the prices at concession stands at football games -- they only have so many games a year and it costs a lot of money to have all that equipment in the food booths so they have to charge prices like that.Of course.
And besides, they would naturally model their business on the Red Cross and if the Red Cross can charge --- why shouldn't they?
Yes, everyone knows === private enterprise is better than government at everything and a profit should be made on everything.
