Congratulations! Now, those of us who had difficulty choosing between EV Tribune and AZ Central have the issue resolved with EV Tribune coming out on top.

Gannett got greedy and has decided to start charging a minimum $10 per month for access to AZ Central — this even on top of the revenue from the annoying pop-up-in- your-face advertising.

Now, I will stay strictly with East Valley Tribune.

You are right. I do hope the activity picks up. I am betting there are a lot who used to post on Azcentral looking for a place to go.

I have no intention of getting a FB page and I will not pay to be bombarded with ads.

I think the Repub shot themselves in the foot.

Yep, I figured I spend too much time on these forums anyway ... so I might as well quit one that wants to charge me.

Especially since their forum software is awful and they have ads too.
At least with cable tv like HBO you can get rid of commercials with lots of the subscriber channels.

No such thing as enough greed for the newspaper though. They deliver mostly ads and want to charge you for the priviledge of having all those ads in your face.

    No thanks.

i got rid of cable and satilite because of all the commercials.
why pay to watch a commercial.remember when satilite had no commercials?
that was the whole idea behind it.

Cable has quite a few subscription channels that have no commercials.

And they have some excellent programs too.

If you watch the standard network channels anywhere you will get eye strain from the commercials. Non-stop. More commercial than show in some cases. If a show is a hit they load it up so it is mostly commercials.

What's even worse is the way they are time-jumping the programs. Starting them a few minutes early and running over a couple of minutes to scroo up people who try to record the programs. If you adjust the recording time on the DVR then you get conflicts trying to record an earlier / later program.

NOW there is something a Congressman could do something good for the people with.

Outlaw network / local station time shifting of programs. Make it a law they have to start on the hour or half hour like they used to do.

There are about 40 over the air channels you can get with a digital antennae on your roof and a digital ready TV. All free. Many of them are religious or dedicated to selling products and another ten or so are Spanish language. All the local channels including major networks are available and several have additional broadcast for special interest features. There’s also a couple of channels that just show old movies without interruption with some commercials in-between. Not a bad investment for just a $20 antennae. If you’ve ever had satellite or cable your house is already wired inside.

When cable was first brought forth, that was a selling point. Pay for the service and be free of the ads.

Not so anymore. Just look at the stories on NBC,CNN and the others and what they are doing is promoting the video of the story. That way you have to sit through the ad before the story starts.

I avoid videos like the plague, yet there are more and more of them.

I stopped going to movies years ago because of the ads before the feature began running.

Now, even when you BUY a DVD, you are likely to have to wade through ads before you get to the movie.

    Irritating as hell.

I would like to suggest that all the regular participants ---- and lurkers too [smile]
    send an email to: sitefeedback@evtrib.com

and politely request that they get better forum software that lets us fix our typos.
I appreciate the Trib letting us comment on articles ... but it is very aggravating not to be able to fix mistakes. That place that charges for access at least had a way to edit your comments ... it was complicated and unwieldy ... but you could do it if you were determined. Here, no way that I've found.

I, too, have come here from the Republic site...their experiment with social engineering doesn't sit well, with me. And, Gannet has never been even remotely a decent company to work for...I should know, I worked at the paper, for 14 years, and saw the death of the Gazette, among many other things...

I'm hoping the Tribune can fill the void...so far, it's not too bad--although they do let things remain up for a long time--especially their polls...and their local stories are mostly fluff pieces, and without any real "news", per se.

Oh, and the endless logging in thing...kinda annoying, especially when the log in doesn't return one to the article to be commented on...

Bluepooet ... welcome. Did you change your nic from what you used on az.central?

If people will email sitefeedback@evtrib.com and politely request that they get better forum software ... they might. Never know. Doesn't hurt to ask.
This software seems like something from 1987.

    Hi, Arizona Willie!

Nope--same "handle" as the one from "over dere"...

I will give your suggestion a shot. Agree, on the dated software feel. It reminds me of Lotus Notes/Sidekick days...

Would be nice to have a personal profile page here, where one could see previous posts/replys, too. That might mean actually buying a server, for the site, though...don't want the Trib to start charging, too!

    [wink]

As for the side discussion, about TV/cable/satellite, etc.

I gave up my satellite TV, some months ago, when it hit me that I was paying a lot of money, per month, for very little value, in terms of entertainment/programming and actual time spent watching. Instead, I purchased a new TV, that is capable of playing Amazon Prime, Hulu, and Netflix, as well as YouTube and some limited internet channels, since I do use internet a lot, anyway.

I also purchased a $30 digital rabbit ears antenna, that gets me the old school channels, which I primarily use as background noise, in the morning, while trying to wake up...(news, weather, etc.)

I don't miss paying for 200 channels of nothingison....at all!

Ok Az Willie, I sent the Trib a letter as per your request. I am not too unhappy with the forum the way it is - we shall see if anything changes.

    Thanks Cerulean and Bluepoet.
If enough people request better forum software ... maybe the EVT will do something.
If az.central had better software I would have been willing to pay.
But, if paying for a news service, I view it like cable subscriber channels like HBO. If I'm paying for it there should be no commercials.
If they want commercials, then it should be free to those who view the commercials.
But being paid by both advertisers and subscribers is over-kill.
I realize the newspapers are that way.
Haven't seen a digital replacement for newspapers that is good enough yet though.

Hey all I. won't pay for azcentral either, in fact I dropped my newspaper subscription also. EVT this is your opportunity to upgrade to a more relevant and up date site. ie update polls daily, along with your stories and your polls stay online interminaby too long, also a like dislike poll on comments would really improve the site.

As far as cable/satellite thing I get up for work between 2-3Am go to bed by 7pm, I need my DVR. and love my subscription channels especially for the great commercial series, my choice, my money and not relevant to azcentral.
