With implementation of the Affordable Care Act happening in just a few months, young people should know how it will benefit them.
As a 21-year-old college student, there are several reasons why I — and other young people — will be able to afford health insurance.
First, subsidies will be available if my entry-level income prevents me from affording insurance. Also, I may not even need to buy insurance, because I now can remain on my parents’ plan until age 26. With the Affordable Care Act, I know that I will be able to find affordable insurance easily on an online marketplace — an Expedia.com for health insurance.
Some of my friends say they’re healthy and therefore don’t need insurance, but I believe young adults have the strongest reasons to buy into the exchange. One accident could result in years of crippling debt if uninsured, derailing any college or career plans. Obamacare makes shopping for insurance worth our time, a change that all young adults should embrace.
