About Will Durst’s mistaken column about gun control and Senator Diane Feinstein’s rants about assault rifles — what does the 2nd Amendment have to do with hunting or target shooting? Nothing. What does it have to do with citizens defending themselves against a government-controlled militia? EVERYTHING! Just ask the successful Viet Cong, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge, the Taliban, and lots of other grassroots insurgencies. The Founding Fathers knew that, and so do a high percentage of US voters.

Ron, Are you trying to scare the citizens, or the government officers?
Why do you use as examples the organizations that have fought against U.S. forces (you forgot to mention the Indians)?
You could just as easily listed the soldiers of the Revolutionary War, the Texans when they were throwing off Mexican rule, or all the pioneers, cowboys and settlers that spread across this continent during the 19th century.
BTW, I don't believe the Vietcong were successful; North Vietnam's diplomats/negotiators fleeced Kissinger, et. al. After our soldiers fought and died to stave off a communist take-over for many years, politicians gave up everything because of political expediency.

Ron… The Viet Cong were the communist side of a proxy war, the Khmer Rouge were an insurgency that killed millions of Cambodians for a radical ideal, and the Taliban are the legacy of a religious student group that uses suicide bombers to blow up girls trying to attend school. Do you want that kind of success?
The well regulated Militia in the 2nd amendment is a state militia, it is a government controlled militia. It’s well regulated! Not like those you cite that are more like the wackos we have here shooting our innocent children.
“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.“

The Second Amendment wasn't created to give the people the right to go target shooting or rabbit hunting.
The Second Amendment was create to give the people the right to overthrow a tyrannical government.
If the people are going to succeed in overthrowing government tyrants they need the same weapons the government has.
In 1776 that meant flintlock rifles, swords and cannons.
In 2013 that means machine guns, rocket propelled grenades, bombs and tanks.
The Second Amendment wasn't created to give the people the right to kill defenseless unarmed children.
The Second Amendment was created to give the people the right to kill well armed government tyrants.

My my. The Ronster wants boys and girls to grow up like "Viet Cong, the Cambodian Khmer Rouge, the Taliban, and lots of others"?
Ronnie, your radical roots are showing.
TempeTownToilet ,
Do you think that little Mica or Sarah really wants machine guns, rocket propelled grenades, bombs and tanks for Christmas this year?
You guys are over the top, in so many ways!

If the Left-Wing "Fringe" want to go back to muskets and cap & ball rifles for the "well-regulated" Militia.....great.....I can live with that as long as we go back ..."ALL THE WAY"...WHEN THE ONLY VOTERS WERE ....WHITE MALES WITH PROPERTY....[wink]

"it is a government controlled militia"
Obviously, you have no clue what a militia actually is. A militia is comprised of "normal" citizens, not government soldiers. By definition, a militia is outside of the government's military, whether it is state or federal.

Article 1, Section 8, U.S. Constitution regarding powers of Congress:
To provide for organizing, arming, and disciplining, the Militia, and for governing such Part of them as may be employed in the Service of the United States, reserving to the States respectively, the Appointment of the Officers, and the Authority of training the Militia according to the discipline prescribed by Congress;

The term “militia of the United States” was defined to comprehend “all able-bodied male citizens of the United States and all other able-bodied males who have . . . declared their intention to become citizens of the United States,” between the ages of eighteen and forty-five.
Notice, there is no serving as a soldier requirement. And if we go with your belief that the 2nd Amendment only applies to those who are part of a (government) militia, then you lose your 2nd Amendment right at 45 years of age, if you become disabled and can't serve in the military (no longer able-bodied), or if you are a woman. (male citizens...women aren't required to register with Selective Service)

The Bill of Rights, including the 2nd amendment, limits what the government may
do. Article 1 lists what Congress can do. Section 8 pretty much defines the National Guard which are militias raised and maintained by individual states.
You may want to think twice when making assumptions about what people believe or reading things that aren't there, unless you like arguing with yourself.

Give me a break with all this craziness about government. No one is overthrowing anyone. The government has a responsibility to its people. We have a government to do the peoples work. Do you remember that? Government is made up of our representitives and work for us. The people of this nation have spoken up and are frustrated with these senseless shootings. So until that day which may never come in regards to your paranoia about overthrow, your expecting that we as a nation are just supposed to deal with all this unneccessary carnage and live in fear? Not knowing who or where the next slaughter is going to happen. We shouldn't have to put up with that. Plus why would you want to defend a nation that doesn't care about its fellow citizens. I get it...because this country is only about you right?

Take - If the support is there, pass an Amendment. If it isn't, then the right of the individual trumps the group.
