Cochise County Sheriff Larry Devers was heralded as an outstanding role model in his community, a devout Mormon, who stood up to the Obama administration, and was a tough sheriff more than willing and able to enforce all the laws of the land. Well, it turns he did not enforce the laws on himself.

With a blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit in the middle of the day, driving over 60 mph on a dirt and gravel road, and no seat belt on, what kind of a role model is that?

I’ll tell you what kind: the epitome of the hypocrites who populate the right wing and the Mormon church.

Edward F. Murphy

Some politicians have their own definition of integrity and honor…

Arizona Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl: “We spent a great deal of time at the border with Sheriff Dever and know first-hand his long commitment to keeping the people of our state safe. Sheriff Dever was a man of honor, integrity, and selfless service to the State of Arizona.”

Tom Morrissey, Chairman of the Arizona Republican Party: “His work in law enforcement and border security were shining examples for all of us, especially for those who saw first-hand how his hard work, integrity, and leadership served the people of Cochise County so well.”

    Edward,
Your letter borders on being the slimiest I have seen at EVT. Your comments about Sheriff Dever are a very low blow. Again the liberal/progressives have no sympathy or understanding for a republican. If this would have been a liberal democratic sheriff you would have proclaimed how sad this was and how much personal grief they were suffering and how understandable this incident would have been. But no, this was a republican sheriff and they must be held to a different standard that democrats. Your pious partisanship belies a double standard which permeates the ideology of liberal/progressives. According to liberal/progressives there can be no forgiveness or understanding for a republican conservative, even in death.

Oh give us a break. Just because he supported SB 1070, was a Republican and a Mormon is no reason to hate this man.

If you want to see hypocrites.....just look at Arizona's latest...."DEMOCRAT"...Lawmaker he fell off of the...."MORAL BANDWAGON".

    BEN ARREDONDO.

We just had a Campaign vist for ...RICHARD CARMONA...from the ..."Adulterer-in-Chief"...the Impeached Democrat President......BILL "WE WERE JUST KA-NOODLING" CLINTON.

There are currently ....7...yes, count them....."seven" Democrat Congressmen and Congresswomen being investigated by the Congressional Ethics Committee.

I could go on and on about ....IMMORAL and UNETHICAL...DEMOCRATS....till the cows come home in 2075.......[wink]

Didn't know the man personally, but I fail to see what being Mormon and a Republican has to do with this? Sure, Mormons aren't supposed to drink, but plenty do; just like many other people who don't follow ALL of the tenets of their faith.

It is sad that a man whose job is to enforce laws (and DUI penalties keep getting more and more draconian) would die breaking several. And I'm sure someone who got a DUI from the man might feel a bit of justice, knowing they got busted by someone who does the exact same thing, but cops believing the law doesn't really apply to them the same way it applies to everyone else is hardly a new thing.

I could care less about the late sheriff's political affiliations.

The fact that he criminally endangered not only himself, but anyone unlucky enough to cross his path...and was then lauded as a hero after his death...

"If this would have been a liberal democratic sheriff you would have proclaimed how sad this was"
Did you miss Babau's piece glorifying Dever? I don't believe either one of them was a "liberal democratic sheriff", but I know how your ilk likes to make up facts.

chatmandu --- how did you EVER accuse someone else of blind partisanship without choking on your tongue?
Your post is a prime example of right wing hypocracy.
You spew Republican drivel all over the forum and then accuse someone else of < partisanship >. O.M.G it's a wonder the EVT's server didn't melt down because of the hypocracy of your post(s).

    chatmandu002,
At least you consistantly hate all who are not Republicans, and Mormon.
Keep it up. I enjoy the laughs.[beam]

Let him without sin cast the first stone. I actually agree, he put other people's lives in danger and that is why they have the law. We all make mistakes. I think people coming out saying what a good man was for the other things he did do. One mistep should not paint someones life, sadly it took his.

"Let him without sin cast the first stone."
I am without sin - but I don't cast stones at people, or engage in any of the other various Old Testament practices (owning slaves, selling children, etc.).

"One mistep should not paint someones life"
    One misstep? ONE??
You DO realize that this was not his first time driving drunk...or even his tenth?
Just read the autopsy report...that level of intoxication would've put your average non- or light drinker into a heavy sleep! And Dever was conscious and driving!

I have a friend who is a Mormon, one day we were talking about the 9 billion world population. I said I could not see how the world could support the world's constant growth, his response was, " In the book of Mormons God will take care of the people." With 2 million death caused from starvation in Somalis this could not be true. Later I realized that their must be a printing error in the book of Mormons it should read tax payers will take car of Mormon children, example U.S. education K-12 average cost $9,000.00 x 6 kids per family = $54,000.00 a year.

truth… and that has what to do with a drunken sheriff flaunting the law and killing himself only to be praised by his ilk?

Let's face it. Examples of hypocracy abound and can be found everywhere. By my count and reconing all of us are hypocritical about something or other.

    Mr. Murphy,

Frankly, I don't know which is worse, a person who pretends to be what they are not, or someone who points that out, after they're dead. Did no one ever caution you to not speak ill of the dead or are you so soul-less that you would inflict pain on his family, for nothing more than a "told you so" moment?

Dale, it's "hypocrisy" - not a biggie, but you've been corrected on this before, try to pay attention this time.

"Hypocracy" sounds like a system of government run by hypocrites! ;)

I won't bother correcting "reckoning" since it could possibly be a typo, and since I make the occasional typo myself, that would be hypocritical.
