Why is NEA a failure? Look at what happens when you open the flood gates without regulation. Look at “indie” publishing, Amazon, whatever Barnes and Noble is doing, Smashwords, sites where people publish freely without going hat-in-hand to a corporation. Okay, there is a lot that really isn’t that good, 1-in-10 is as good as what the corporations do. I’ve been a book seller for 50 years. It’s been my life. And yet, with the indies 1 in 100 is better than anything the corporations do. That’s right, better. Honest, straight-forward literary art without hype, movie contracts and other assorted junk. There’s almost 500,000 books, and 5,000 of them are better than anything in a bookstore. The plus is, they average $1.50. I never thought nouveau roman had been written in America until I read “Top Forty” on Smashwords, and it is the equal of Claude Simon. When the government calls the tune, the dancers just do it privately. We need places for artists to exhibit, not governments to tell them what to exhibit.
