Susan G. Komen Central and Northern Arizona supports Governor Brewer’s Medicaid Restoration Plan.
Arizona knows all too well the negative consequences of being under- or uninsured. Every day, we field phone calls from women who are terrified. They have found a lump or been diagnosed with breast cancer and do not have the means to pay for a mammogram or chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.
You cannot ignore breast cancer. You cannot just hope that it will go away. The consequences of not receiving quality treatment are, quite literally, deadly.
Each year, we provide grants to non-profit programs that provide breast cancer services to those in our community who have fallen — or are in danger of falling — through the cracks. While we awarded $1.2 million to 15 community programs this year, our year-over-year funding capability has been declining. Demand for our support has increased with the changes to our Medicaid population, yet funding resources remain scarce. We are not able to come close to funding every grant request that we receive.
We cannot sustain support for the increasing need in our community and provide a safety net for the under- and uninsured without the Medicaid Restoration plan.
We believe in access to quality care for all. We believe in working together to make it happen. We believe in Restoring Arizona.
