As Executive Director of The Arc of Arizona, an organization dedicated to serving people with disabilities since 1958, I see daily the impact of committed people joining together to advocate for the rights and community participation of people with disabilities.

Just as I’m proud that The Arc is a leader in serving Arizonans with disabilities, I’m proud that the U.S. is a leader in promoting human rights and freedom worldwide. Now this nation must be a leader in the global effort to guarantee equality to persons with disabilities by ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

This treaty is of vital importance to all Americans because of its promotion of human rights and American leadership, but it’s particularly important here in Arizona, home to many thousands of men and women who served in our Armed Forces, many of whom returned with disabilities. CRPD helps open up the world to these disabled veterans and make them better able to travel, work, and study abroad.

We applaud Sen. John McCain for his strong support of CRPD, and urge Senator Jeff Flake to join him in voting for this crucial treaty.
