“He served with honor and distinction.” Those are the exact words that President Obama’s National Security Advisor Susan Rice said on National Television regarding recently released U.S. Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

That contradicts the statements of more than eight soldiers and sergeants from Sgt. Bergdahl’s platoon. They said he walked out past the “wire” without his body armor, rifle, and night vision glasses. He had a digital camera, water, knife and compass when he deserted his platoon on or about June 30, 2009.

Article 85; Desertion (U.S. Military Uniform Code of Military Justice) states;

(a) Any member of the armed forces who;

(1) Without Authority goes or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to remain away there from permanently;

(2) quits his unit, organization, or place of duty or to shirk important service: ... is guilty of desertion. As to punishment ... (c) Any person found guilty of desertion or attempt to desert shall be punished, if the offense is committed in time of war, by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct ...”

President Obama’s Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel, on national television, said that he wasn’t aware of any of the circumstances regarding Sgt. Bergdahl’s “desertion.” He only needs to read the Department of Defense’s Criminal Event, Kidnapping Report, B Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division’s Report. In “Update 1012z,” it states, “Guardrail reports pick up llvi traffic at grid VB 6597 3366 that states UIM indicates that an American Soldier is talking and looking for someone who speaks English. Indicates soldier has camera.”

One of Sgt. Bergdahl’s fellow sergeants from his unit states he heard this report from the interpreter translating from local Taliban cell phones.

Is this “serving with honor and distinction?” President Obama will be visited the D-Day Ceremony in Normandy, France this weekend. Hopefully, some of the “Best Generation’s” patriotism will rub off on him when he sees first-hand the sacrifices of the tens of thousands of American War Dead who did serve with honor and distinction.
