There's been lots of discussion lately about compassionate conservatives, or are they uncompassionate? Excellent letter to the editor by Steve Ball ("You want good intentions or positive results?" Aug. 24).

Another big point in this debate is the outright fraud anytime there is government money available. The free-loaders and outright crooks come out of the woodwork; that's what most of us object to. We don't object to giving a hand up where it's truly needed. Just look at the tens of billions of dollars (yes, that's BILLIONS) in annual Medicare fraud.

And although it's corporate money rather than government, look at the article on the previous page of the same Aug. 24 paper about the BP oil spill fund, which also illustrates this very well. There were 947,892 claims filed, from all 50 states plus 36 foreign countries. Really? People in Alaska, Oregon, Nebraska, North Dakota, etc., were harmed? And even foreign countries? Come on, folks! So far less than 360,00 have been judged as valid, 430,000 were denied, the rest are still in process, and more are still coming in. Yeah, let's go get some of that "free money!"
