I am horrified by the sight of people driving down the 202 and other freeways while text messaging against their steering wheels. I cannot imagine what could be so important that could not wait until you are at your next stop to communicate with someone else. There are a number of signs and street bridges over the top of the lanes on the freeway. I am usually against government intrusion in our privacy, but it would be an idea to have cameras take random pictures looking down through the windshield of cars driving underneath and additionally getting a shot of their license plate. Sad as it is, I am sure they would catch multiple people daily texting while driving. Hand out a few fines, suspend a few licenses and we would see this trend diminish quickly.

Or when you see someone driving and texting just grab your phone and text their license number to DPS. [beam]
Seriously, though, I think automakers should have to include a device that disables cellphones ( including the built in hands free one ) while the vehicle is in motion.
And, you should have to have older vehicles retro-fitted in order to re-register them.
People got along fine before cell phones. As you say, there is nothing so important it won't wait.
Anyone involved in an accident that was using a cell phone should be charged with attempted murder. It is totally irresponsible to divert your attention from driving.
Anyone who uses a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle is basically saying ' this is so important to me that I don't care if I kill some one ' .
Personally, I think cell phones were the worst thing to be invented in the last 50 years.

I was driving home a couple of days ago and sure enough a woman coming in the opposite direction crossed the line in front of me while she was texting. Luckily I was watching and was able to avoid her. She yanked the steering wheel back and almost ran upon the curb. Stupid folks will never learn until they kill someone or themselves.

I wonder if it stems from the child raising system that came into vogue where parents weren't supposed to spank Johnny and the schools gave everyone who played in a game a trophy because it would hurt Johnny's self esteem to tell him he sucked at something.
Same for grades. Couldn't flunk kids and hold them back anymore because you couldn't hurt Johnny's self esteem. He would feel badly if he was kept back. Can't have that.

I think it comes from the excessive thrust to put computers into ever child's hand. Computers in every class ,video games on the go and DVD players in every car. I just saw a commercial for a cell phone so you could watch movies streaming. Who has the time to watch a movie on their cell phone or would want to? Who are they selling this stuff too?

Random photos? Invasion of privacy? Illegal search?
Wow, welcome to the new Amerika, comrade!
That being said, I agree it is a problem. There is already a law against it. But, since texting has caused accidents and death, we must ban texting devices. sarc off.

Enough with the cameras, already! This would only make people try to text, with the phone down low--even more dangerous! The disable-while-moving idea has some merit, but not sure how reliable or tamper proof that could be.
I'm hoping that the voice text becomes more viable--maybe have smart phones that one wears as a necklace. Or, just have a subcutaneous port to plug into...like a Borg!!
