If your son or daughter uses marijuana, where would you prefer they purchase it from? Drug dealers who also sell other drugs like cocaine and heroin, or medical marijuana cardholders?

The question isn't who should our children purchase marijuana from? But why should our children be purchasing marijuana at all?

Let's see, are we now ascribing a higher level of confidence to people because they hold a MM card? Again, lets be honest, many of these "cardholders" got them from scetchy "medical professionals" pointing to phantom maladies as the reason for need. Add to that, that certainly the cardholder policy does not give carta blanc to then distribute, so they are additionally lawbreakers. So if the question is whether you want your child to buy their pot from a drug dealer or a likely lying lawbreaker, it is probably a toss up. I would prefer my children don't buy or smoke pot at all.

Arizona Medical Marijuana Act (AMMA) was approved in 2010 by a narrow margin of about 4,300 votes in Arizona.

But, in hopes to repeal the AMMA law there may be another medical marijuana election coming up next year. Arizona lawmaker Rep. John Kavanagh, R-Fountain Hills has filed a bill that would refer the AMMA back to voters statewide in November 2014.

Kirk Muse’s question is: “If your son or daughter uses marijuana, where would you prefer they purchase it from?”

    State’s medical-marijuana law is unconstitutional.

The legislative session opens Monday, and we will see how the Arizona lawmakers feel about the state initiative that legalizes the purchase of pot for medical use.

VofReason, I don't believe your remark about " phantom maladies ".

You have to submit copies of your medical records documenting the condition.

People don't just walk into a " co-op " or dispensary and claim ' oh my back hurts '.

You have to get a letter of recommendation from a doctor in addition to submitting a copy of your medical records.

If your doctor doesn't believe in medical marijuana ( and most don't ) and refuses to write you a letter, you have to go through one of the clinics where there is a doctor who interviews you for an hour and who checks out your medical records.

That doctor is risking their medical license and is very very unlikely to approve people who are seeking MMJ and who don't meet the criteria.

You also talk about " sketchy " medical professionals. Well they had to pass the Arizona licensing exams. Of course, they call the person who graduated at the bottom of his medical class " Doctor ". So the doctor in the clinic may not have graduated at the top of his class at Mayo Medical School --- but they are a doctor -- legally.

Hopefully the person applying was able to afford a top notch doctor and has just had to take his records into the clinic for that doctor to review.

But, as far as the law is concerned, a doctor is a doctor.

vofreason: the same scetchy "medical professionals" that allowed tea party hero

wdgnas, it was kind of ironic a few weeks ago when the papers published an article complaining that a relative few doctors were writing over 90% of the recommendation letters for medical marijuana --- with strong implications that was somehow improper.

But they didn't complain about the relatively small number of doctors who run the pain clinics on every other corner in the Valley who do little other than write prescriptions for oxycodone medications all day long.

Of course, Big Pharma makes billions of dollars from that -- so that makes it just fine.

Big Pharma has tried to duplicate Medical Marijuana with marinol but it doesn't work very well at all.

Strange that although the Federal Government claims there is no medical benefit to medical marijuana and insists it belongs on Schedule I .. the Federal Government has taken out patents on cannabinoids ( the effective ingredient in medical marijuana ).

Az Willie seems to know a lot of the particulars around getting a MM card. Gives all new understanding to many of his posts. Yes, so scetchy Doctors gave Rush Limbuagh a perscription and so they should also be able to give the average 1980s concert shirt wearer the same. Yes, now I see the light- how could I have questioned? I am a little confused on the high bar that Willie paints above when I seem to remember driving down Thomas at Scottsdale and seeing a slacker with a body sign encouraging all bypassers to come in for their MM perscription. Certainly this must have been an anomoly. Anyone want to bet that if you lined up all the Az "Cardholders", it would look like the general admission section of a "Dead" show?

VofReason: why do you call the guy with the sign in Scottsdale a " slacker "? At least he is working, doing the best he can.

I wonder how long that practice of having a sign waver continued.

There is no doubt in anybody's mind that someone will always go too far.

    ALWAYS

But, I'm sure, he was trying to get people to come in and have the on site doctor start the process with them. Just because they walk in doesn't mean they walk out with an MM card. Even if your medical records justify it and the doctor agrees it takes 2 weeks approx for the State to send you your card.

The State goes over the records and the doctors letter of recommendation too.

If you think it's so easy -- go try it.

And yes, I do have a MMJ card.

Nothing secret or shameful about it anymore than having hearing aids --- and I got those too.

The other day my wife came into my computer room and we started to go somewhere and I started laughing because I hadn't put my eyes on or my ears in. When you get older you have to remember where you left your body parts :)

    Kirk (OP),

Your choices leave much to be desired. Personally, I'd rather go to the grower, but I don't have a son or a daughter, so I can't really answer all of your question, and I can only guess at what your point really is, because it's kinda hidden in a veil of back story, that's missing.

VofRaison, What you got against the Grateful Dead? Many straight people like them, too, and although I hung up my tie-dye tees quite a few years ago, I'd still go to their shows, if, you know, they were all still alive. But, of course, you're take on even those who would benefit from it (marijuana) medically, reveals much about your ignorance, your bias, and even your lack of insight into the potential for an investment. Which would make you a viable candidate to be wearing the "SECURITY" jacket, at the Dead concert! (I bet all you straights look alike, too)...(sarcasm off)

    The Dude abides...

blue poet: while i am not a member of the mutual admiration society, i had to chortle while reading you comment.

vofreason: my point was there are scetchy doctors that give out oxycontin like candy for those who are willing to pay for it. i would say more regulation is in order, but that might cause your head to explode. you should either call them all or call none of them.

Prescription pot has become a hot topic in Arizona lately, since Prop 203 now allows people suffering from various ailments to be prescribed marijuana by a doctor.

The state chose 97 dispensary operators in August – for marijuana cardholders. In Arizona, 90 percent of cardholders get their pot for pain, and not for serious illnesses.

Arizona officials say some Arizona youths – school students in grades 8, 10 and 12 – apparently are getting marijuana from people with state-issued medical marijuana cards.

Keep AZ Drug Free believes we need to do all we can to get drugs off our streets – that includes marijuana in any form. Drugs are a threat to our way of life – to our children, to our families, to our safety.

Keep AZ Drug Free has endorsed new bill (HCR 200) put forward in the Arizona Legislature asking voters to repeal the medical marijuana legalization measure they narrowly passed in 2010.

ateam1: while i do not consider myself to be a liberal, i do know that cigarette, cigar and pipe tobacco smoke gives me headaches. along with exhaust from cars with catalytic converters. not so with smoke from marijuana. ever look at the ingredients in cigarettes to day. toxins meant to keep the cigarette from going out. you are one that would complain if your ice cream was too cold.

Arizona Willie you don't really believe that the health dept reads your medical records do you? I will tell everyone the truth what really happens. People bypass the doctor altogether and fill out their own paperwork. All they have to do is look up any doctor and get his MD number and fill the paperwork out themselves...bam!! there you go...a green card in 10 days tops.
