This letter is in response to a letter you published on May 22, 2013 entitled “Government shouldn’t overreach in regulating midwives.” While I can sympathize with a need for support on an issue that will impact their lives, I do not feel it is fair to ask for support without providing all the facts regarding home births.

Home births are becoming a more common trend than they have been in years past, and with that trend has come an increase in home birth injuries and deaths, both to the mother and child. There are many options when it comes to home births and not all require much training or medical knowledge, and that can be very dangerous. In fact, a close friend of mine and her child both died as the result of a home birth, and I feel it is necessary to educate soon-to-be-parents about the various types of home births, the benefits, and most importantly the risks involved.

I, along with my employer, attorney Richard Console, wrote a piece about the dangers of home births, and I wanted to share this piece with you. Perhaps it can shed some light on the facts of the home birth situation that was not previously afforded by the other letter.
