I am the Arizona state chair of a political party called American Third Position.

Today, I got a booklet in the mail from the Arizona Secretary of State. The title of the booklet is “What’s on my Ballot?” It is a guide to Arizona’s general election.

There will be nine propositions on the ballot in the upcoming election. Eight of them are proposed amendments to the Arizona State Constitution. The remaining one is a voter initiative.

The hottest item by far is Proposition 121. Proposition 121 is about an open primary election for the State of Arizona. There are pages and pages of arguments both for and against this proposition. Two people arguing against it are Governor Jan Brewer and Russell Pearce.

Governor Brewer points out that, in an open primary, a candidate does not have to list his party affiliation on the ballot. This will leave the door wide open for deceptive campaigning.

When I was in high school, we discussed the merits of closed primaries versus open primaries. One disadvantage of a closed primary is that it allows party raiding. The Democrats can vote for the weakest Republican candidate so that their own candidate will have less competition. I have always had my doubts of Sen. John McCain. If I didn’t know better, I would swear that he was a product of party raiding.
