Our Republican Corporation Commissioners Bob Stump, Bob Burns, Brenda Burns, Gary Pierce and Susan Bitter Smith apparently agree that burning trash is good for our air quality. This seems counterproductive to me, considering that the main intent of incorporating ‘renewable energy’
into the mix of energy resources is to reduce air pollution.
For this reason, I am grateful that a recent court hearing brought by the Sierra Club ruled against the practice.
The ruling does not prevent the Republican Commission (Bob Stump, Bob Burns, Brenda Burns, Gary Pierce and Susan Bitter Smith) from rewriting the rules for Arizona to include trash burning as part of our 15 percent renewable resource goal. This would also allow utilities to impose a surcharge or a tax to burn trash. Until very recently, burning trash was more toxic than burning coal. Today incinerators are more efficient but still emit tons of soot, CO2 and mercury. I do not trust the Republican Commissioners (Bob Stump, Bob Burns, Brenda Burns, Gary Pierce and Susan Bitter Smith) to regulate clean burning standards that meet or exceed EPA standards, nor do I trust Arizona agencies to enforce the standards if the rules are changed to allow burning trash.
There is an opportunity here for our Corporation Commissioners to expand the use of solar and wind generated energy. I am going to write my Commissioners to encourage them to consider solar and wind in lieu of burning trash.
