I remember when I first came to Mesa in 2001, everything was booming. You couldn’t find a parking space at Wal-Mart and all the check-out lights were on and the lines were 10 shopping carts long. I just came back from my Monthly trip to Wal-Mart and was struck by how deserted and down-sized it has become. My Fry’s Supermarket had hordes and hordes of winter visitors, shopping carts full to the brim with top-of-the-line liquor and huge roasts. We “locals” dreaded going shopping. Now we go and there are just 2-3 lanes open because no one is buying anything. Full to the brim shopping carts are as extinct as the dinosaurs.
No shoppers mean no tax revenues, but our Mesa mayor and city council are still spending ever-shrinking tax revenues like drunken sailors.
Obama and the Democrats are stuck in the Clinton Era when America had tax money coming in, hand-over-fist.
The Liberal News Media (newspapers and the TV) berate the “Tea Party” for wanting to talk about the deficit, fiscal responsibility or the fiscal cliff. The Democrats hate being reminded that out of every single dollar that is spent on Obama-Care, Medicare, Medicaid, disaster relief, un-employment compensation, and all the other so-called entitlements, that 40 Cents are having to be borrowed from the Red Chinese People’s Army Pension Fund.
America now owes our enemy, communist China, trillions and trillions of America’s non-existent tax dollars. Folks, this is madness that has got to stop now.

Leon,
You need medical assistance for that selective amnesia.
You forgot to mention the 8 years that George W. Bush was POTUS.
Just because you say the words it doesn't mean it is the truth.
Bush started us on the road to ruin with the tax gifts to the rich, which DID NOTHING for the economy except pad bank accounts of the already rich..

Leon, which Walmart do you shop at? I'd like to know because the one I go to is crowded any time I go - any day, and time of day. Check out lines are long and annoying and slow. I'm no fan of Fry's and with nicer, more pleasant options I suspect your Fry's is becoming unpopular as people discover alternatives. Been to Winco yet? You want to see crowds buying? Go there. You want grocery grave-yards then go to Fresh n'Easy.
You really want to see spending? Go to Costco - it's crazy.

"Senator" Obama voted 10 times to fund the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. He only voted once (after he was the Democrat Presidential Nominee) against the funding.
No wonder our Mesa students are so far down the "learning curve".

Leom... Where has all the money gone you ask? Your second sentence answered your own question.
Walmart, the nations largest employer and provider of jobs that don't pay a sustainable wage and forces thier employees onto food stamps and other government assistance, is a proficient outsourcer of American jobs. These corporations that make huge profits by exporting our jobs, then offshoring those profits in foriegn banks to avoid taxes, taking even more capital out of the economy and leaving a larger tax burden on the rest. It's estimated that up to 33 TRILLION Dollars has been deposited in offshore banks. This is just one part of the economic mess we struggle with today. The next time you ponder what's happened to our once thriving economy, look no further than the nearest mirror.

The liberal/progressive/socialist's first thoughts are to defame the bearer of bad news. No where is there a hint of understanding of the problems or solution, only recrimination and others to blame.

downtownresident : If Leon concedes Bushes misgivings will you concede that Bill Clinton signed the deregulation of banks that led to our financial collapse? Will both of you then concede that both parties are equally to blame for current financial issues? Left wing right wing still wings from the SAME bird. Keep fighting amongst yourselves its what keeps them in power.

Here is a link to a video that EVERYONE should see.
I think it would provide lots of material for discussion.

IAB,
Never! Clinton did facilitate the de-regulation of COMMERCIAL banks.
Bear Stearns, Lehman, etc. were not affiliated with commercial banks.
Unethical bankers are responsible for the collapse, no matter how many times you say otherwse, it still won't be true!

What is it with Michelle Obama and those "dominatrix studded belts" of hers.
She wore a very nice plain, subdued, classy coat and then had to go and spoil it with the black dominatrix belt. What a shame.

Arizona Willie and Jonathan Haidt,
Informative, interesting and good. My favorite part was the mention of Grover Norquist’s endorsement of ‘Right on Crime – The conservative case for reform’ that speaks to the industrial prison complex and their hunger for more bodies to fill prison space. Surprise, I was indeed surprised, even though I have agreed, in the past, with Tom Patterson for making similar statements.

Common sense. W gave all the surplus back to us, fought 2 wars (whether you agreed or disagreed... we had the wars) and created homeland security and TSA all while cutting taxes. No war bonds, no sacrifice at home, no rationing, no commitment from the American people. Just huge deficits to show for it.
It's akin to the people who bought the most house they could qualify for, then maxed out all the credit cards to furnish it, bought two new cars, and the wife quit her job. They atm'd the house a couple times to keep up the payments on all the debt, and then blamed the back for foreclosing.
I am all for smaller govt. But we need to realize there is a price to be paid for smaller govt. Everyone wants something from the govt (SSI,Social Security, Medicare, section 8 housing, utility subsidies, roads, parks, schools, police, fire, natl parks, etc) but everybody thinks the other guy should be the one to pay for it.
Final note, everyone should have to pony up - including the 47% that pay no taxes now. They too should have to contribute - if not in dollars then in service to their country.

Cerulean: thanks for the comments on Haigt's video.
Glad to see someone took the trouble to actually go see it.
I was impressed with his non-partisanship.

AZ,
Saw the video...interesting, and I think he's right--common threats create common ground. He was also very correct about the mechanics of polarization.
I'm not so sure about his assessment of Congress, as being populated by well-meaning, intelligent people, however...but I got his point, nonetheless, about how any desire to reach across to solve gets firmly punished. Very interesting about the change in their work week making it so they don't move their families to DC, and therefore, there's no socialization taking place among them...I wasn't aware of that...
Thanks for the link!

Bubba - Obama supports outsourcing of US jobs to poor countries. What do you think he meant when he said our wealth isn't sustainable in the world view, and that we need to invest in other countries?
That being said, POTUS only has limited ability to mess with the economy. Most of it is based on perception, and that's for the masses to decide.

AZW, Cerulean & Blue... Johathan Haidt has a couple of books out mostly based on his hands on research. 'The Rightious Mind' is a good read and provides an insight to the way that we form our opinions and stick with 'em regardless of what others say.
BTW... leon is a troll. Trolls only get bigger and stronger when you feed them. If you want to do something nice for him, he's registered for wardrobes at Goodwill.

OK, President Bush started 2 wars all by himself without anyone else knowing and lowered taxes for everyone (that's everyone). If so terrible and wrong, why didn't President Obama stop both on day one and raise taxes to previous levels immediately to "fix" it? Even if he had, would he have come anywhere close to erasing the 6 trillion he eventually has created in deficit. Right, that is why it is a misnomer when you bring this up as an arguement. At how many years out does the unemployment become President Obama's problem?
Bluepoet posted at 2:29 pm on Thu, Jan 24, 2013.
Because Obama has the same master(s) as Bush=$= (re:taxes and wars)
You mean the unemployment that is steadily coming down from Bush-era high levels? I think he's been claiming that all along...
