An assisted-living and memory care community for low-income seniors and the disabled is looking for help making residents' holidays happier.

The folks who live at Copper Heights, at 152 N. 56th Street in Mesa, off Main between Higley and Recker, most are on ALTCS. That's the Arizona Long Term Care System, a program for low income people.

Many of the residents have few friends or family nearby - if any - and they all struggle financially.

For example, although the community provides them with cable service, residents miss out snacks to enjoy with their favorite shows or just throughout the day.

But that doesn't mean they lack resourcefulness.

The community's activities assistant, Barbara Carman, and admissions director, Rossana Bayani, helped residents organize a rummage, craft and bake sale in November so they can earn a little extra money for gifts for either their friends or those who have family contact.

Other ways to help:

• The community put up a wish ornament tree in its front office. People can stop by from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays to choose an ornament with a resident's wish and return the ornament, attached to a wrapped gift, before Copper Heights’s Christmas party on Dec. 24 at 2 p.m. And on Dec. 19, residents will decorate holiday sugar cookies for Copper Heights’s Christmas party. Donations for decorating items such as icing, sprinkles, etc., as well as donations of food items for the party are welcome.

• Also, the facility said, "We would appreciate hearing from any church groups, students, schools, ASU clubs, etc., that would like to provide entertainment for the residents in December as well as possibly adopting one of our “Jewels” from our memory care for the holidays."
