The letter from the reader (Elizabeth Cress-Sweet; Sept. 4, 2013) who urges that the final section of the Keystone Pipeline be built cracked me up. According to the writer, finishing the Keystone Pipeline will allow Canadian oil to flow into the United States and “get us out from under the whims of foreign oil producers.” Ignoring the fact that Canada is a foreign country, she apparently does not know that Canada already is the main provider of oil to the United States.

According to the writer, the pipeline will create lots of jobs, but this has repeatedly been proven to be false. In addition, the maxed-out refinery capacity in the United States predicts that most of the Canadian oil flowing through the pipeline will be sent abroad for refining and ultimately end up in China to satisfy their growing demand with no economic benefit to the United States. Unless you are a Fox News junkie, no one believes that finishing the Keystone Pipeline will “help the United States get back on track.”
