If we're allowed to blame "the system", maybe the system to look at is the one that chooses the administrator to run major law enforcement departments.
The Sheriff should not be elected based on who performs the best political stunts. The position should be filled by hiring the best qualified candidate.
let's see the joe groupies ignore or dispute this one... oh I can hear it now, liberal reporting and so on. The problem is, it's been known and fact for sometime this was an issue for MCSO. I can tell you where the 600 grand went, more toys and stunts for the joe show. But, you just keep on swallowing his dog an pony show citizens of Maricopa County. Don't let facts or evidence of wrong doing get in your way, keep on voting this fraud back into office while victims of the most brutal crimes get stomped on some more.
Arizona's Democrat Party Chairman, Randy Parraz, starts up a "Recall Petition Drive" against newly re-elected (for the 6th time, by the way) Maricopa County Sheriff, Joe Arpaio just .......3 MONTHS AGO.....and our resident ...."SB1070 Haters" are coming out of their closets by the handful. You only have to open an Arizona's "People's" Republic, or the other Liberal rag with all of the "escort" ads and you will see commentaries and Letters to the Editor by the "u-know-what" load....lol. According to the "official" Rape Statistics from the AZ Dept. of Public Safety for the last 10 years (2002 - 2011)....there were 5,102 Rapes reported to the Phoenix PD. There were 1,480 Rapes reported to the Mesa PD and only 302...yes, Folks, only 302 Rapes reported to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department. How many of the thousands of Rapes that occurred in Phoenix and Mesa have been solved. How many Mesa and Phoenix Rapists have been sent to prison. That's what this Columnist and all the other "Sheriff Joe Haters" should be asking?
... and by the way, can't wait to see joes response to this article. He will probably launch another investigation into obama's birth using his free posse members.

Leon, I'm not a "SB1070 Hater". I don't support illegals at all, but Joe has little real impact on illegals. He puts on a good show, and if you hate/fear immigrants enough, that's all you see. You overlook his gross incompetence because you don't bother to look past the facade.
As Attorney General, Terry Goddard arguably did more to fight illegal immigration and drug smuggling than anything Joe has accomplished. Goddard shut down the major illegal money pipeline from the U.S. into Mexico, making it harder to get drug money into Mexico and much harder for illegals to send money home.
Why is it that the anti-Joe people NEVER concern themselves about all the unsolved sex crimes in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa? Each one of those cities has MORE unsolved sex crimes than the Maricopa Sheriff's Office, but not a peep out of the same people who want Joe hung. 400 sex crimes unsolved over 8 years that's 50 a year. Really, probably not all that bad if compared to other County Sheriff's with the same size jurisdiction. Not to mention the huge increase in population in Maricopa, most of it illegal alien criminals.

Chatmandu002, It's very clear that the systemic problems were not identified or fixed. They put a band-aid on one visible symptom of the problems. The underlying problem is that the Sheriff's department is very poorly managed. Joe knows that as long as there are plenty of voters like you, who don't bother to look into the facts, he can keep shifting responsibility for his failures and keep being re-elected despite his incompetence.
@ arizona willie,,,,actually i do gripe about that. and yes i despise sheriff joe deeply. he's a criminal just like the ones he places behind bars. looking at the facts though, it seems AZ altogether is lacking in prosecuting sex crimes in general. i got an excellent ad for AZ,,, ladies come to Az so you to can be sexually assualted and have no recousre,,,, wether you report it or not!! that'll bring women in by the boat loads. after all Az is just following republican rhetoric when it comes to rape. you see those weren't legitamate rapes and therefore don't count against the statistics.

@madman, doesn't it seem at least a little bit silly to call the phrasing of one individual, who was immediately chastised by most other Republicans "Republican rhetoric"?
Further points off for misspelling what seems to be the most important word in your post.
@Accuracy, It's not clear to me from your post what, exactly, you find fault with in this article.
Instead of Mike McClellan's "Sheriff Joe Bashing", let's have the Mesa Police Chief, the Phoenix Police Chief and Sheriff Joe give the East Valley Public the numbers of Rape Cases that have been solved and the Rapists brought to Justice. The Women of the Mesa, Phoenix and Maricopa County deserved to be given this information.
Number of Rapes reported to the Mesa Police Department = 1,480 (2002 - 2011) Number of Rapes reported to the Phoenix Police Department = 5,102 (2002 - 2011) Number of Rapes reported to the Maricopa County Sheriff Department = 302 (2002 -2022).
HOW MANY RAPISTS SENT TO JAIL? HOW MANY RAPE CASES SOLVED ?
WE DON'T WANT ANYMORE RHETORIC OR CHARACTER BASHING....JUST THE FACTS.....JUST THE FACTS.
whenever your argument for excusing the failure of an elected official or an agency is that other elected officials or agencies have also failed...you've lost before you even started.
Just checking, but I wonder how many Police Officers get rapped compared to the larger population. You know, knowing that all are armed and they have their weapon in their personal life and all. Hmmmmm?
DonMey: I read it in an article in the Az Republic(an) shortly after the election. I had raised the question often before the election but no one ever had an answer. I was surprised when the paper admitted that Joe's office did better than other local police departments, but unfortunately, I didn't save the article so I don't have a link. Leon just published some numbers of rapes but not the number solved.
I agree it isn't an excuse ... it's a comparison and ( if true ) shows that Joe hasn't done nearly as bad a job as his haters try to claim. It is hypocritical, at best, to accuse Joe of not doing his job while IGNORING a worse situation in Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa.
It makes it obvious that they are complaining out of personal animus. Very likely they encountered Joe's hospitality at some point. I wonder if they kept their pink underwear.
None of that, though, makes Joe's department innocent. But his haters act like he PERSONALLY told the deputies to not process the cases. And the situation was nothing like that.
Hmmm, my comment instantly disappeared!! I must have done something wrong. grrr
DonMey, I read an article in the Republic shortly after the election where they told how many unsolved sex crimes the various departments had but I didn't save it or a link to it.
Leon just posted the number of rapes in the jurisdictions but not the number solved. I doubt the various Police Department would tell an individual who called up but a reporter could get the data again I'm sure.
No it doesn't excuse Joe's department, it is for comparison and shows that his department doesn't do nearly as badly as his haters try to paint. His haters try to imply that Joe personally told detectives not to solve the cases. Didn't happen like that.
Leon and Az Willie - You point out that the problem is rampant in municipal police departments, therefore MCSO’s bad behavior is ok. NOT! No, no, no. Mike said that money diverted from SVU went to animal-abuse crimes and Joe’s immigration sweeps, and who knows? This is not acceptable.
Rich, “Nonetheless, the Joe Show was renewed for another four years. The systemic failure is that of the voters.” You got that right.
Mike, you have produced another very good column. Thanks
The really sad thing. bobunf is that you expect better of the system. It wasn't constructed to produce better. It was constructed to leave the real power in non-authoritative hands. He's a half demented senior citizen, the best thing you can do is ignore his performance and enjoy his ineptitude. I mean everyone loved the Keystone cops.
The system will take a look at each case and pay damages from count coffers to victims. Every system produces output. Now 10,000 documents, later claims against the county, and finally a drain of tax money because a majority of voters don't connect how poorly the system worked with failed responsibility.

In this thread I have seen "unsolved sex crimes" mentioned numerous times. The issue is NOT unsolved sex crimes, but UNINVESTIGATED sex crimes....BIG, BIG, BIG difference, and that is only one of the numerous reasons why Arpaio should not be sheriff. Some of the other reasons, and this is by no means an inclusive list: $70 million paid for by the taxpayers of Maricopa County in lawsuits against him, $100 million of unaccounted for funds, and while the overall crime rate has gone done in AZ as a whole over the last 10 years it has increased substantially in the areas that Arpaio has jurisdiction over.
Mike.....let's see a column where you "DON'T".....go after supporters of "SB 1070".
THAT'S THE REAL REASON FOR THIS COLUMN....IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH "UNINVESTIGATED SEX CRIMES".
IF MIKE WAS SO CONCERNED ABOUT WOMEN BEING RAPED....HE WOULD WRITE A COLUMN ABOUT THE 1,480 RAPES THAT OCCURED IN MESA AND THE ASTOUNDING......5,102 RAPES THAT OCCURED IN PHOENIX BETWEEN THE YEARS OF ......2002 - 2011.
And Mike...kudos to you...keep up the good work. It takes someone with great courage to shine the light where the majority of the people don't want to look. By the way... did you ever teach at Lindbergh Elementary? My daughter Melanie once had a great teacher there named Mr. MCClellon.
