Agree with the punchline. However, did the father here value his own time? Saving a few dollars by waisting an hour and a half and running all over town does not sound like a good deal to me.

VofReason ...I think you missed the point....."I had no idea at the time, but my father taught me many valuable lessons — lessons he'd wished his father, who died when my dad was only 3, had been able to teach him." ....then read the next three paragraphs. An hour and a half spent teaching your kids life's lessons is a very good deal.

Nice story/parable...it sure beats the one my Dad taught me...buy the ugliest tree on the lot, at the last minute, for the least amount possible. Take it home, and try to cajole your wife into taking on the decoration of it, as an "artistice challenge"...!
