I am writing about the not-so-thoughtful letter from gun (lover) Arthur C. Peterson: “What kind of country do you want?” I’d like to live in a country where so-called law-abiding citizens do not have access to weapons of war like AK 47’s that are designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible. I also certainly don’t want to live in a country where citizens are allowed to possess chemical or biological weapons like Peterson advocated.

I’d like to add the U.S. and Canadian crime rate is about the same with one glaring exception: the homicide rate. The U.S. homicide rate is 5.0 per 100,000. The Canadian homicide rate is 1.9 per 100,000 population. Why the difference? Access to guns.

See, Kirk, what you don't understand is that we need more bullets, not necessarily more guns.

At least that's what the Republicans want, because in their 2012 platform, they call for unlimited bullet capacities in magazines and clips, the kind that the Aurora shooter and the Tucson shooter had. Imagine how many more would have died if the Republicans had had their way and made this the law of the land a few years ago.

Yep, the Republican solution to gun violence is to make sure the violence can be even greater.

    Republican Party, circa 2012.

Well Kirk and Mike: Canada is looking for a few well versed, peace loving individuals so why not make the move? You could always become winter visitors if you feel safe enough visiting such a lawless country.

PS: I have been a registered democrat for over 52 years although I doubt if they will get my vote this year because Obama feels illegal aliens deserve more rights than our own unemployed citizens.

    Kirk,
Most homicides are committed with handguns not with the "weapons of war" as you proclaim.

ARE YOU JOKING.....CANADA....AS AN EXAMPLE OF "GOOD GOVERNMENT"...NOW THAT'S A HOOT....A REAL ....HOOT

Canada are Brits who just drank all the ..."politically correct"...Kool-Aid that the European Union is putting out by the tank trucks.

Remember watching Poor Prince William and Kate having to say every speech in English, French and what ever "Native-Canadian" Tribe lived within 100miles of the Event. Quebec is more "Bolshie" (aka Commie) than Russia is right now. They even want their own "Navy" for Gawd's sake.

As for Gun Control.....the Federal Government in Toronto let each Province set their own rules. If an American wants to put good ole US Dollars into the Local Canadian Economy and go hunting, he has more paper work to fill out and drag around that a New York Lawyer. If the hunter lands in Calgary because it is the closest airport to where he is hunting in Alberta. He has to have applied for 2 different sets of gun permits. If he decides to visit Vancouver....that in British Columbia....yup, gun permit number 3 is needed. Do anyone in their right mind call this "successful" gun control. It's gun less control. More "cradle to grave" Big Brother knows what's right for the Citizen......Socialism.

Sure Canada has its problems. But guns and healthcare are not among them. Rather than sending people north, we ought to consider adopting ideas south!

It’s interesting that so many who claim they want freedom always try to convince those who don’t agree with them to leave. If someone has sympathy for the Mexican immigrants, they are told to move to Mexico. If they like something Canada does, they are told to move to Canada.

One of the great things about our nation is that we have the right and even the obligation to share ideas. Looks like the main thing the self proclaimed freedom advocates dislike is the first amendment when they so staidly defend their interpretation of the second amendment.

california leon – you with a gun? that’s scary, very scary. From you letter I gather that you’re in favor of federal gun control because state by state would require too much paper work. So what’s so different here? Try landing in at Kennedy in New York with your AK-47 and see how that works out. And what business if it of yours what Prince William does in Quebec? Their socialism is their business.

Yup agree. No more AK 47s for common citizens. Someone remind me how many people in the US has these and how many run into theaters or anywhere else and shoot people up with them. OK. How many people who actually are charged with gun homicide by people who have a registered firearm versus those that occur with a stolen or underground weapon? Who saves you if someone breaks into your house at 3 am?
