The Brits are getting graphic and gruesome in their fight against cigarette smoking.

Cigarette packs now carry photos of all the awful things that can happen to you from smoking - lung cancer, throat cancer, heart surgery, and gum disease. The old warning labels weren't particularly genteel - "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death" - but the Brits decided to go the medical textbook route and show smokers what they might see if they attended their own autopsy.

The campaign comes at a good time because London's high-flying investment banks and brokerages have been hit as hard as our own and as a result, according to the Associated Press, cigarette and alcohol sales are rising.

If the pictures work in the United Kingdom, our own health nannies will surely want to try them here.
