In the last decade and a half, animal shelters in numerous communities have implemented a bold series of programs and services to reduce birthrates, increase adoptions, and keep animals with their responsible caretakers. As a result, they are achieving unprecedented results, saving upwards of 95 percent of all impounded animals in their animal control facilities. These communities share very little demographically. What they do share is leadership at their shelters with a passion for lifesaving and who have comprehensively implemented a key series of programs and services, collectively referred to as the “No Kill Equation.”
At one time, those communities also offered little more than killing and excuses: pet overpopulation, blaming the public, a lack of resources. When they stopped blaming and changed their own behavior, the killing stopped. There is still a “public” in these communities, animals are still entering their shelters, and resources are tight. But they are succeeding, where ours is failing.
The fundamental lesson from the experiences of these communities is that the choices made by shelter managers are the most significant variables in whether animals live or die. Several communities are more than doubling adoptions and cutting killing by as much as 75 percent — and it isn’t taking them five years or more to do it. They are doing it virtually overnight. There are now “no kill” communities in California, Kentucky, Indiana, New York, Michigan, Texas, Nevada, Virginia, and elsewhere. In short, there are no valid excuses as to why our community cannot do the same if it chooses.

Leon, If the U.S. were like Latin America where abortions are illegal we too would have 1.4 million illegal abortions, 500,000 death a year from illegal abortions. Is your only solution to make abortions illegal even when the mothers life is at question? One said we should not look at someones religon of a potential Predident, I say a Presidents religon should not rule the country.

Adoption. DUH!! I don't believe for a nanosecond that ANY abortions are necessary. Evcen in the so-called case where the mothe's life is at risk. Come on! WIth all the technology we have today, is terminating the pregnancy really the smart way to go? The Number One reason why I will not vote for Obama is because he supports infanticide. That's when the infant is killed outside the womb. When it's alive, and breathing on its own, it is MURDERED. There is zero justification for this evil act. NONE!
I am not anti-women. They are a very important part of our lives. But to be honest, I don't know a single woman who supports abortion. They all oppose it.
When people say that women should be allowed to do what they want with their bodies, they say nothing about the infant that is murdered. Many of those infants were female. I both 1) suspect you haven't read it yet, and 2) suspect that reading it will be distasteful, for gaining an education for the likes of you always is distasteful. But gaining some historical perspective on these issues will help you strengthen your argument, helping you focus on the gaping hole in it.
Read Roe vs. Wade, you know, the Supreme Court decision that got us to where we are today. In the majority opinion, we read the history behind this question. Is a human fetus a person? That's the central hole in your argument. You assume that it is, when historically it was not!
Why do you believe that a human fetus is a person? What historical precedents support that belief? What historical precedents refute your assumption? And don't give us "common sense." It hasn't been at all common!
And before you go off 'half cocked' against me, know that I share your beliefs but not for the reasons I suspect you hold them. And I share the reasoning employed in the Roe v Wade majority opinion. How about them apples! Your high school education sure could use some further development.

Truth is we should sterilize anyone who demands an abortion. You should get one abortion, but the next one should result in forced sterilization of the mother and heavy penalties for the father. That should take care of most of the overpopulation and illegal abortions. It's about time we get rid of the bleeding heart liberals and get a government that can make the tough decisions that we need. I would go further and say that anyone wanting to have children should be forced to undergo psychological as well as intellectual testing to determine whether or not they are suitable to even be parents. That's my solution.

Many of us see a real problem with feral cats that have no possibility of ever becoming family pets. When we catch them in our traps, we don't take them to the SPCA. We put a bullet in their heads and dispose of the bodies. You would be surprised to know how many of us there are doing this service for you bleeding heart liberals that have no problem with killing fetuses but want to let the feral cats destroy property and suffer miserable lives. Pro life yet for the death penalty. That is a tuffy. Let's see, one is an inncent life and one has been found guilty of a heinous crime. Yes, how do people reconcile these things? A mystery for sure. To the letter at hand, I have tried to abobt a pet from the pound on a number of occasions. Each time there was some reason that the dog I wanted could not go that day. That is the problem.
