I read one reporter suggesting ASU doesn't have successful programs in athletics like USC and Oregon, especially football, because of lack of support of wealthy alumni. This was not the case in the 1970s and 80s.

As a volunteer and chairman of ASU football and basketball parking with Tempe Jaycees in 1977-82, it was amazing to count the money in parking alone for the university after football games. In the old Frank Kush days, 70,000 to 79,000 fans were common. Winning and hard nose football was a tradition. Many of the beautiful buildings on campus were built from ASU profits in the basketball and football program under Coaches Frank Kush and Ned Wulk. Both coaches were demanding. Their players practiced fundamentals perfectly, were united as a team, and tough love was accepted respectfully by their players. Boosters were there because ASU's image of successful and championship athletic programs were evident in track, golf, tennis, wrestling, swimming and other sports.

Today's coaches are prodded by lawyers and psychologists to be friends and to not be too pushy with their athletes. Good coaching is true teaching and real teaching is uncomfortable, to be pushed out of your comfort zone for excellence.

How about picking a coach in our own back yard, who grew up in Mesa, played for Frank Kush as QB and won championships in college, NFL, and in coaching the Arizona Rattlers? My vote is Danny White to succeed Dennis Erickson. How about Jake Plummer to be Danny's offensive coach? Watch what happens to attendance, which has been sub par. The alumni will come back because they remember the pride and toughness of winning ASU tradition under Frank Kush and Ned Wulk. Hire a Kush-like coach who teaches firmly and is not there to just make friends with his players.
