So the university police chiefs all stand shoulder to shoulder proclaiming that allowing people to carry a gun anywhere on university grounds is going to cause police in a shootout to shoot innocent gun owners most of whom under pressure would behave like heroic idiots.

Pushing aside the reality that any kind of a shootout is an extremely rare event in the first place and pushing aside the reality that such an extremely rare shootout would most likely be over well before any campus or city police showed up, consider that most gun carriers are not idiots and clearly understand and accept the risks of getting shot at by either unfriendly or friendly fire. Most gun owners have pondered such scenarios, have some empathy and would know to put down or put away their gun and raise hands or some such gesture on seeing or hearing police.

It’s a wonder we idiots are allowed to drive a car or have children!

My fear is the more likely scenario that in such an extremely rare shootout a police officer might panic and start shooting without warning on the sight of a gun even in spite of knowing this is a gun-carrying state. But isn’t that what police training is for?

Ultimately it is not about allowing or giving permission to carry a gun on campus but about recognizing an individual’s freedom of choice. That’s the one element that distinguishes us from a communist country, kingdom or dictatorship.
