An enduring artistic question, waiting over five centuries for an answer: Why, exactly, is Mona Lisa smiling in Leonardo da Vinci’s fabled portrait?

Dutch researchers believe they have found the answer.

They subjected an image of the Mona Lisa and her inscrutable smile to what the Associated Press described as "cutting-edge ‘emotion-recognition’ software" that uses sophisticated biometrics to read facial expressions. The researchers stress that the results (shown below) are unscientific but they make sense to us nonscientists. So why is Mona Lisa smiling? She’s happy, that’s why. The da Vinci code, broken.
