Dear Sen. Jon Kyl,

Thank you for your letter of Dec. 22, 2011 which I finally received on Jan. 23. Perhaps you would blame the USPS?

Previously I suggested that Citizens United needed to be changed by a Constitutional Amendment, one you should sponsor. Your reply was disappointing, but expected.

I suggested that Citizens United allowed corporations to fund PACS, not candidates, and without limits. I suggested that if a corporation's board thought campaign contributions to PACS were in the corporation's best interests, they ought to pay the money out to their shareholders as dividends with a recommendation that it be sent to PACS or even to candidates.

You concluded: "Ultimately, the American people will decide the merits of the messages that unions and corporations deliver when they go to the polls to cast their votes. And isn't that as it should be?"

If only your underlying assumption were true! Neither unions nor corporations are people. But in one respect Mitt Romney is right that corporation profits do go to people, people who should decide what to do with their money. And that IS the way it should be!
