I am surprised there is no story about Gary Bird, a Tempean who died on the 99th floor of WTC on 911. Gary not only was a terrific husband and father, but a civic-minded man who made his community better by serving as president of the Tempe Jaycees and Tempe Boys and Girls Club. Gary had a new job as VP of Marsh Insurance in Phoenix and was going to their orientation that awful and fateful day.
I knew Gary as a helpful teacher, advisor, leader, and friend. He believed in helping people more needy than himself. Intuitively, I know he was helping people trying to escape being trapped on the 99th floor of the 2nd tower at the WTC that day their lives were cut short by evil and selfish terrorists. When the flames were taking his life he said goodbye to his loving wife and children. Gary was so well-liked and admired by all people he came in contact with you have to ask is there an eternal or spiritual plan in all of this? Why do the good die young? We sure could use more unselfish people with an honorable, trusting and can-do attitude like Gary Bird today, in my opinion.
